AIIMS Delhi: A Leader in IBD Care and Research

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, is India’s apex public medical institution, renowned for excellence in patient care, medical education, and clinical research. The dedicated IBD clinic, a specialized facility within the Department of Gastroenterology & Human Nutrition Unit, is among the country’s leading centers for the management of inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Since its inception, the clinic has provided longitudinal, multidisciplinary care to thousands of patients, undertaken patient-centric initiatives such as the IBD NutriCare app[1,2], and led research initiatives that have advanced understanding of India-specific IBD epidemiology, disease presentation, progression, and treatment response[3,4,5,6,7].

Expansive patient health record repository

Over the years, physicians at the AIIMS IBD clinic have maintained detailed longitudinal health records for thousands of patients using a file-paper system. Each patient file contains dated information on clinical history, physical examination, laboratory investigations, treatments, and follow-up assessments. These records have been used in retrospective clinical studies, with researchers manually reviewing files to extract predefined parameters[8]. However, large-scale manual data processing is time-consuming and severely limits the speed at which critical insights can be generated—an urgent concern as India is projected to have one of the world’s highest burdens of IBD in the coming years[3].

AI-powered Documentation system to accelerate IBD research

To address this challenge, Oxalis Technologies will implement Foster’s AI system to automatically process the IBD clinic’s more than 10,000 patient records and extract parameters of interest. Using our AI-powered handwriting processing and form-filling modules[9], the system will generate structured outputs aligned with IBD-defined templates from handwritten files. Each AI-generated entry will include a clear explanation, allowing clinicians to quickly review both the output and its rationale. This solution enables real-time data extraction, improves accuracy, and significantly reduces the manual effort previously required from researchers.

This pioneering AI-enhanced gastroenterology research initiative, led by the AIIMS IBD Clinic, is expected to act as a catalyst for accelerating research and expanding the capacity of evidence-based studies in India. It will enable researchers to rapidly analyze large patient datasets, test new hypotheses, and identify patterns that would have previously taken much longer to detect. Ultimately, this initiative is expected to generate knowledge that will improve the quality of life for IBD patients across India and facilitate the development of low-cost therapies that can benefit patients throughout Asia.
